Debt Crisis
24th May 2010
The implications for EU States including Ireland of Europe’s response to the debt crisis within a number of member states will be considered at a meeting of the Oireachtas European Affairs Committee tomorrow, (25th) at 2pm in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House.
Dan O’Brien, Senior Europe editor and Economist with the Economist Intelligence will appear at the Committee.
The meeting comes amidst the decision by the EU to establish a stabilisation fund of €500 billion for the euro-area. A loan of €30 billion has already been arranged for Greece, with Ireland making a contribution of €1.3 billion to this amount.
Committee Chairman, Bernard Durkan TD said
“Europe is experiencing a debt crisis and currency problems on an unprecedented scale. In response to this situation, the EU has introduced a series of measures aimed at preserving financial stability and ensuring monetary sustainability in the future.
Inevitably, these measures will have consequences for Ireland and its economy. Dan O’Brien is a respected economist and financial journalist with the Economist Intelligence Unit (IEU). The IEU is a well regarded body in providing reports, data and predictions on global economic issues. Therefore his opinions on this hugely significant area will be extremely significant and informative.”
