A Co Louth man appeared before the Special Criminal Court this morning charged in connection with the discovery of explosive substances in Dundalk over the weekend.
Philip McKevitt (56) of Aghaboys, Mount Pleasant in Dundalk was charged with the unlawful possession of explosive substances, namely an improvised trailer and two gas cylinders “adapted” to cause an explosion, on May 22nd last.
He was remanded in custody to appear again in court next month.
Detective Garda Kieran Regan, Special Detective Unit, this morning gave details of arrest, charge and caution.
Garda Regan identified Mr McKevitt for the court and said he informed the accused last night that he would be brought before a special sitting of the court today to be charged.
Mr McKevitt spoke only to identify his name.
Michael O’Donovan, solicitor for the State, asked that the court remand him in custody.
The court heard the Dundalk man had injuries “to his head and body”.
A legal representative, with Michael Finucane solicitors, requested that the court recommend Mr McKevitt receive further medical attention “as soon as possible”.
The Special Criminal Court, with Ms Justice Alison Lindsay presiding, ordered that this take place and remanded the man in custody to appear before it again on June 8th next.
