Robberies

Measures to Combat Post Office Robberies to be Discussed with An Post at Oireachtas Committee

11 May 2010

The Heads of Security and Retail at An Post will attend a meeting of the Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, tomorrow (12th) at 9:45 am in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House.

The Committee will be informed of some of the security and safety measures operated by An Post throughout their post office network following a spate of post office robberies in recent months. Mr Jim Daly, Retail Director, An Post and Steve Clements, Head of Security, An Post will be the witnesses at the meeting.

Committee Chairman, MJ Nolan TD said;
“Worryingly, there have been a number of high profile raids on post offices in recent months. Some have involved so-called “tiger kidnappings” where a member of the postmaster’s family has been held in exchange for cash.

Some of these robberies have also involved firearms and threatening behaviour, while in some cases significant sums have money have been targeted. Therefore, it will be useful to be reassured that there are robust security procedures in place to deal with this type of criminality.

The meeting tomorrow will allow Committee members to get some degree of insight into how An Post tackle this matter and what developments are pending in this area.
