Lost at Sea Scheme

Oireachtas Committee to Continue its Investigation into Lost at Sea Scheme by Meeting with Fisheries Minister

16th June 2010

The Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Fisheries and Food will continue its analysis of the Lost at Sea scheme today (16th), when it meets with the current Minister with responsibility for Fisheries, Se n Connick TD.

The meeting will take place at 11:30 am in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House.

In a report on the Lost at Sea Scheme, the Ombudsman examined a programme to grant aid replacement capacity for vessels lost at sea. The report concluded that a family excluded from the scheme should be awarded €250,000 in compensation. However, these findings were not accepted by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

The Committee has already spoken to a number of witnesses on this topic and intends to reach findings on the matter following the conclusion of its deliberations.

Committee Chairman, Johnny Brady TD said:
“The Committee is thoroughly scrutinising this matter in order to decide whether it feels that a fair and balanced approach was taken to administering the scheme.

We have previously heard from the Ombudsman, officials from the Department of Agriculture and the former Minister with responsibility for the Lost at Sea scheme to consider their views. The meeting tomorrow will continue the Committee’s assessment of the matter and will help the Committee reach its ultimate conclusions.”
