Derry City of Culture

Well Done Derry Says Oireachtas Good Friday Committee

Committee to Invite Representatives to Meeting to Find out More About Plans for 2013

16th July 2010

The City of Derry should take a massive bow following its selection as Britain’s City of Culture for 2013, the Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement has said today.

The Committee also hopes to invite members of the organisers to a meeting in the near future to find out more about what events are being planned for the city during its momentous year.

Committee Chairman, Noel Treacy TD said;

“The Committee is thrilled with the news of Derry’s success. This announcement is a huge feather in the cap for the city, its citizens and for those who have done so much to secure this title.

This event has the potential to give a huge boost to Derry’s economic, cultural and tourist potential. The city has already come along way in recent years and this award will enable it to progress even further.

I look forward to inviting members of the organising committee to a meeting in the Oireachtas where we can learn of some of the exciting events and plans which are no doubt in train.

While this achievement is down to the work of so many I would like in particular to mention the input of US Special Economic Envoy to Northern Ireland, Mr Declan Kelly, who I know has worked tirelessly on behalf of the city in its successful bid.”
