Fr Sean Healy to Outline his Plans for a Fairer Tax System at Oireachtas Committee

14 September 2010

New proposals by Social Justice Ireland on how on to reform the tax system making it fairer and benefiting 113,000 low income families will be presented at the Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection, tomorrow, (15th) at 11 am in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House.

Fr S an Healy and Brigid Reynolds from Social Justice Ireland and officials from the Department of Finance and the Revenue Commissioners will attend the meeting.

Social Justice Ireland will outline plans which they believe would benefit 113,000 low income individuals by making tax credits refundable. They will argue when children and other adults in the household are taken into account the total number of beneficiaries would be 240,000.

The Department of Finance has previously estimated that the cost of a limited refundable tax credit scheme if introduced would be in the region €3 billion. However Social Justice Ireland claim the figure would only be €140 million.

The purpose of the meeting tomorrow is to enable Social Justice Ireland to clearly explain how their proposals would work, why they believe the cost would be far less than estimated by the Department of Finance and to give officials from the Department and the Revenue Commissioners an opportunity to comment on the practicalities of Fr Healy’s suggestions.
