Sports - Free to Air?
21st September 2010
The question of whether some sporting events should be fee to all on terrestrial television will be considered at tomorrow’s (22nd) meeting of the Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Energy and Natural Resources.
The meeting will take place at 9:45 am in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House.
The meeting is happening following a proposal by the Minister for Communications, Eamon Ryan to make competitions such as the Six Nations and the Heineken Cup available through terrestrial TV.
Tomorrow’s discussion will be addressed by two academics, Dr Farrel Corcoran, DCU and Dr Paul Rouse UCD, with a strong knowledge broadcasting.
The Chief Executive of the IRFU, Philip Browne made a submission on this topic to the Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Sports and Tourism in June.
Committee Chairman, MJ Nolan TD said;
“The suggestion that some big sporting events would be taken away from pay per view channels and broadcast on terrestrial television has incited quite a bit of controversy.
The Minister is seeking submissions regarding his proposals in order to inform the final decision which will be made by the Government by the end of the year.
The Committee is being addressed by these two academics with experience and knowledge of broadcasting. Their observations on this matter should provide a useful insight on the best way forward.”
Dr Farrel Corcoran is Professor of Communication in Dublin City University. From 1995 to 2000, he served as Chairman of RTE. He has served as Head of Communication and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at DCU
