Mobile Phones
Officials from ComReg, the organisation for regulating communications in Ireland will attend the meeting which takes place tomorrow, (6th) at 9:45 am in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House.
Also due for discussion at the meeting is the allocation and uptake of “116” telephone numbers. These numbers are common numbers for services of social value and have been utilised in Ireland by organisations such as the Samaritans and Childline.
Committee Chairman, MJ Nolan TD;
“There are still some areas where getting a decent mobile signal is problematic. On some of the new motorway networks across the country, coverage can be intermittent and you find yourself drifting in and out of signal.
This can be extremely inconvenient especially for business people who need to be contact while in transit. Coverage on train lines can also be inconsistent and if we are trying to encourage people to use public transport it is imperative that we have reliable coverage.
At tomorrow’s meeting we will put these issues to the regulator and see what is being done to upgrade coverage in the country. In order to attract business and investment into the country we need to make sure that proper communications channels exist.”
