Homophile Teacher Charged with Sex Crimes -

A maths teacher at one of Britain's most prestigious public schools has been charged with sexually assaulting a pupil.

Assistant housemaster Bruce Roth, 44, was arrested by detectives called in to probe £27,000-a-year Wellington College after a boy claimed he had been abused.

Roth, who was living in accommodation in the grounds of the world-famous institution, was immediately suspended from duties when the allegations surfaced.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said today that Roth had been charged with three counts of unlawful sexual activity with a boy aged between 13 years and 17 years and abusing a position of trust.

'Bruce Roth, of Dukes Ride, Crowthorne, Berkshire, was charged by officers on Tuesday. He has been released on police bail to appear before High Wycombe Magistrates Court on February 15,' said the spokesman.

Wellington College, whose past pupils include comedian and impressionist Rory Bremner and singer Will Young, is isolated and set in huge 400 acre grounds on the outskirts of Crowthorne village.

Its Master is Anthony Seldon, Tony Blair's biographer, who was appointed as the 13th Master in charge in 2006. The college charges annual fees of £27,000.

The college, which has a strong sporting prowess with 995 pupils and has been visited by the Queen on numerous occasions, mainly educates boy boarders although some girls have recently been admitted when it became co-educational.

Roth, who has taught maths at the school for 15 years, is also a keen sportsman and taught rugby at the college as well as cross-country running.

Sources said that he was also a keen shooting expert and was a member of the Scottish national shooting team as well as being selected to shoot for Great Britain.

The college website describes Roth, who was educated at Hull University, as 'a keen musician who sings at various cathedrals in the area as will as playing the lute and the oboe.'

'He teaches mathematics and is actively involved in editing and reviewing mathematics texts,' the website continues.

A police source said that his case had been sent to High Wycombe because the usual magistrates court at Maidenhead is closed for refurbishment.

Wellington College, whose pupils are given regular 'positive psychology lessons', has hit the headlines in the past.

In 2005 two male prefects were suspended for filming a girl and her boyfriend having sex and in 2004 a 15-year-old boy was expelled for dealing in cannabis. Two 16-year-olds were also suspended for possessing it at the school.
