Dissident 'republicans' Armed with Provisional IRA weapons

Police investigating the murder of PSNI officer Ronan Kerr have arrested a man in Scotland.

Mr Kerr (25) was killed when a booby-trap bomb exploded under his car in Omagh, Co Tyrone, on Saturday.

News of the arrest emerged after religious, civic, political and sporting figures joined hundreds of local people for Mr Kerr's funeral in the Tyrone village of Beragh

The murder has been blamed on dissident republicans opposed to the peace process. Strathclyde Police said the suspect was detained in Renton, Dunbartonshire, an area that has a significant Irish terrorist support base and where one of the local pipe bands is named after a dead IRA terrorist.

Today's arrest comes following a "significant" haul of arms, including rocket launcher components and detonators in Coalisland, east Tyrone, last night.

The cache also included four Kalashnikov rifles and Semtex explosive all of which belonged to the Provisional IRA and was allegedly decommissioned, however, it is known that members of the Provisional IRA were allowed to take weapons from PIRA arms dumps before they were inspected by the International Decommissioning body that had been tasked with over-seeing the destruction of Provisional IRA weapons. PIRA semtex was also used in the Omagh bomb on 15th August 1998 that murdered 29 men, women and children.

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde police said: “Strathclyde Police can confirm that a 26-year-old male was arrested at approximately 1.10pm on Main Street, Renton, Dunbartonshire.

“This arrest was made by Strathclyde Police officers in relation to an ongoing investigation led by the Police Service of Northern Ireland.”
