David Norris President of Ireland
The Sunday Independent/Quantum Research Opinion Poll of 500 people, shows that 30% of those surveyed would like to see Mr Norris become the country's next President.
In joint second place is Fine Gael's new member, Pat Cox, and Labour's Fergus Finlay, with 13% of the vote each.
The poll comes as the Labour Party will hold a convention in Dublin this afternoon to select the candidate which it plans to put forward for the presidential election.
Barnardos chief Finlay, Labour Party President Michael D Higgins and former Tipperary North councillor Kathleen O'Meara are all vying to get the nomination.
The result of the secret ballot should be known by 4pm today.
Meanwhile, another Fine Gael member has announced that she is to contest the presidential election.
Former MEP and former Wexford TD Avril Doyle is to seek the party's nomination.
The other members are Fine Gael Pat Cox and MEPs Máiread McGuinness and Gay Mitchell.
