Lurgan rape and Real IRA violence

Real IRA planned violence in Lurgan has created the conditions and climate for the gang rape of a 26 year old woman in the County Armagh town and left a young man with serious injuries.

A 26-year-old woman has suffered serious injuries in a gang-rape in Lurgan, while a 23-year-old man was also assaulted and is fighting for his life in hospital.

The pair were held hostage in a flat in Dingwell Park in the town and endured a nightmare ordeal over a prolonged period, from the early hours of Wednesday into the evening.

Detectives from the PSNI's Rape Crime Unit at Mahon Road in Portadown believe a number of men were involved in the assaults on both victims.

Taughnevan community worker Pat McMenamin told UTV that local residents have been left reeling from news of the horrific attack.

"The community is in total shock to think this happened on their doorstep," he said.

"People are afraid because they think the people who are responsible for this may be living among us."
