Leaving Cert Results 8/17/2011

Leaving Cert Results 8/17/2011
Wednesday 17/8/2011 the long wait is almost over and by now, most of the 57,000+ leaving cert students have probably estimated your results. So how did everyone do? Last year the average was between 350-400 points.
Only one Leaving Certificate student achieved nine A1s in the 2010 leaving cert exams – the highest in the country.
Six pupils secured eight A1s on higher level subjects while 37 got the top mark in seven papers and 92 secured six.
But the State Examinations Commission (SEC) revealed the number of high achievers dipped from 2009, when 11 teenagers got eight A1s and one scooped nine.
So only one person in the country got nine A1′s in 2010 which is the same as 2009, Yes, only one. Disgraceful. Six got eight A1′s, which pales in comparison to 2009’s eleven, and people wonder why the leaving cert has become so competitive and a points race? However, It’s wrong on so many levels to focus on one high achiever and not to mention of failure rates, no mention of individuals (all just stats and comparisons)… ignore the headline stories in 2011, who cares what some Dublin 4 silver spooned Mammy’s boy/girl got in their Leaving Cert, what about the real kids who championed over adversity to make modest yet remarkable achievements, these are the real stories, the real people.
Enough with the leaving cert elite, here’s a stat for you – less than 0.24% of people got 600 points. Yes they deserve praise, but they’re a tiny minority group and we must not let their success detract from the average John or Mary who’s given it 100%, gotten 300 points but is delighted and never expected it.
Whatever your results in 2011 you are a winner, don’t worry about the privileged and don’t be bullied by Tabloid headlines, often written by semi-literate journophiles.
