David Norris leads Presidential Poll

David Norris has yet to get on the ballot paper for the race for the Aras, but a new opinion poll puts him in the lead over other candidates.

The Red C Survey for tomorrow's Sunday Business Post gives Labour's Michael D Higgins the lead among the confirmed candidates.

Sinn Féin now has the same support as Fianna Fáil according to the poll, and both are just behind Labour.

When voters were asked about seven Presidential candidates - the five confirmed, plus Dana and David Norris - it is Senator Norris who has the edge on 21%.

Labour's Michael D Higgins is on 18%, Martin McGuinness has 16%, Mary Davis and Gay Mitchell are neck and neck on 13% each, Sean Gallagher is on 11%, and Dana is on 6%.

Among the five confirmed candidates only, it is Michael D Higgins out in front on 27%, Martin McGuinness and Mary Davis are tied on 20% each, with 15% apiece for Gay Mitchell and Seán Gallagher.

Mr Higgins and Ms Davis do well on transfers, while Mr Norris and Mr McGuinness do not.

The state of the parties also throws up some surprises with Fine Gael on 33%, while Labour are on 16%.

That is only a point ahead of Sinn Féin on 15%, which is the same support Fianna Fáil has, while Independents have the backing of 21% of voters.
