Higgins to paddle his own canoe, while Fianna Fail are thrown overboard, and Sinn Fein are expected to row in behind the labour canditate. A new opinion poll shows the majority of people want Michael D Higgins to become the next President.

According to a survey in the Sunday Independent, 32% of people say they would vote for the Labour party candidate.

Gay Mitchell is in second place with 24%.

Of the other candidates, Mary Davis commands 13% first-preference support, while Sean Gallagher is on 11%.

But 18% said they would vote for David Norris - despite the fact that he pulled out of the presidential race.

Mr Norris has four weeks to decide whether or not he'll re-enter the race for the Áras.

Senator Norris said he is moved by the support the people of Ireland continue to show him.

The Senator made the comment on his twitter page this morning which has been inactive since he withdrew his name.

Mr Norris withdrew from the race after admitting he did not show proper judgement in appealing for clemency for his former partner who had been convicted of statutory rape.
