McGuinness, M16 Correspondence, Sinn Fein, President

This is a true copy of one of the many correspondence passed between M16 Agent Michael Oakley and IRA leader Martin McGuinness (codename: Martha) all of this correspondence was handed over to Professor Paul Bew in 1995 as he could establish an audit of the dealings that occured between the British Government and the Provisional IRA.

Comms – Please note that this is for Martha addressee 0000/93
Subject: Sir Patrick (local chairman) Major (national chairman) response to recent activity
Please find attached the text of my briefing for both the local and national chairmen
Sirs
I am certain that our asset has no choice but to sanction the various activities of his understudies in order to maintain his rank and key position not only in Derry but more importantly at National level, all of which is to our benefit.
I understand and appreciate that the orange position is difficult; however, this is about the death of the few in the interests of the many and more importantly the protection of our own people here at home.
I expect to meet with Martha when he arrives at our base next week; he takes great risks meeting with us when those particular meetings are not known to others.
I am satisfied at this point that Martha will assist us in every manner, although I understand the concerns about his needing to continue to sanction violent operations.
The briefing from RUC HQ shows that our actions in the border region these past years have rolled back the excessive power of the Border Bandits, the SAS remain ready to strike if Martha encounters any real difficulties in that region.
I remain confident that matters can be brought to a favourable solution within a short time frame, local internal-house-keeping matters with persist, however, that activity will not tax the minds of the great British public nor indeed the Irish Government who are awash with corruption.
It is my position that Martha must be able to flex his authority in order to maintain his status, we must continue to afford him every protection and bite our tongue at the sight of local corpses.
