Child Abuse, Childrens Rights Alliance, Sex Abuse

The Children's Rights Alliance says a referendum on the rights of children will give the people the opportunity to protect future generation.

Today is World Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse and throughout the week, the organisation has worked to raise awareness.

On Thursday, TDs and Senators signed a pledge wall, as a symbol of their support of the strengthening of children's rights in the Constitution.

Figures show that 90% of child abuse happens in the home and the community, and citizens are being reminded to stay alert to any possible indicators of this crime such as self-harming and a change in behaviour.

"This weekend is a great opportunity to raise again the issue of holding a referendum on children's rights," said Carys Thomas, Communications Director with the Children's Rights Alliance.

"Today is World Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse, and tomorrow is the 22nd anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child."
