Sinn Fein, Liam Adams, Child Rape
Mr Adams (56), was extradited to Northern Ireland from the Republic of Ireland yesterday.
He appeared at Laganside Magistrates’ Court in Belfast today charged with the rape of of his daughter Áine Tyrell from she was four-years-old, who has waived her right to anonymity.
Mr Adams, who denies the allegations, was accompanied in court by his wife and one of their daughters.
Magistrate Fiona Bagnell refused a bail request in line with the concerns of a police officer investigating the case who told the court there was a risk of flight.
Mr Adams was remanded in custody for one week to appear in court again on November 10th by video link.
He was handed over to the PSNI at the Border late last night. He was taken into custody in Dublin last month after losing his appeal against the decision to extradite him.
He faces multiple charges of rape and indecent assault against his daughter Áine Tyrell. He denies the allegations made against him.
It is claimed the sexual offences occurred at various addresses in Belfast between March 1977 and March 1983 when the alleged victim was aged between four and 10 years old. It is alleged some of the offences occurred when Ms Tyrell’s mother was out of the family’s house.
Mr Adams, with a last address at Bernagh Avenue in Belfast, turned himself in to gardaí in Dublin in March 2010 after a European arrest warrant was issued by the PSNI.
Lawyers for Mr Adams argued his prosecution was “politically motivated” and that he had been treated differently from other people accused of criminal offences by members of Sinn Féin and by those in opposing parties seeking to generate “political capital” from his association with Sinn Féin.
